Colors of Cancer Walk taking place Saturday

pOGDENSBURG — The grounds of the Dobisky Center will be awash with colors Saturday morning when the St. Lawrence County Colors of Cancer Walk kicks off at 10 a.m. /ppThis is the second year of the event that has replaced the long-running Ogdensburg Relay For Life. /ppThe walk will raise money for The American Cancer Society. /ppThe group, with $18,000 already raised, is approaching the halfway mark toward its $50,000 goal. /ppThat total was bolstered by the group’s most successful auction ever on May 18 at the Ogdensburg Elks Lodge, when more than $9,000 was raised. /ppThis year, the entire walk will be confined to the green area around the Dobisky Center in order to maintain a feeling of community. /ppThere will be raffles, games and other fundraising activities. /ppCancer survivors have always been a big part of any American Cancer Society fundraiser and the St. Lawrence County Colors of Cancer Walk will feature special T-shirts for survivors, a buffet spread of light snacks, an inspirational survivors’ lap and a moving testimonial from a survivor who has been named honorary chair of the event. /ppA DJ will provide music. /ppOne of the mainstays of the old Relay For Life event was the Luminaria Ceremony, in which bags lit from within by candle and decorated with the names of cancer survivors and those lost to the disease were displayed around the track. /ppThis year, because the event will be entirely during daylight hours, the ceremony remains, but the luminarias will be displayed on a specially designed temporary installation. /ppThe American Cancer Society is the largest provider of cancer research funds, aside from the federal government. /ppVolunteers in Ogdensburg and throughout St. Lawrence County have raised thousands of dollars over the years. /ppAnyone can participate in the walk. There will be a sign-up table outside the Dobisky Center. The St. Lawrence County Colors of Cancer Walk gets underway at 10 a.m. /p
